What to Wear to Your Family Photo Shoot When It's Cold Outside | Concord, Massachusetts Family Photographer

Baby, it’s cold outside! As I write this, the snow is falling outside my window during our first winter storm of the season.

That being said, it’s been chilly for several weeks now and I’ve gotten a lot of questions about how to dress warmly for outdoor family photos when it’s cold. I have a few tips to share that will keep you and your family warm while looking great!

Start With Coats

I can’t recommend enough getting everyone into a coat when the temperatures dip below 50 degrees.

Without them, kids have a very limited period of cheerful, smiling photos before everything dissolves into grouchiness and tears. You’ve worked so hard to get to your session, so let’s keep everyone in a good mood!

Look for coats with classic cuts, like pea and duffle coats, which have a more formal look than a puffy coat. These don’t need to be expensive to be warm—Target, Amazon, and Old Navy all have great options every year.

Layer, Layer, Layer!

If you’re worried about your kiddos getting hot while running around during their session, layers make it easy to cool off—and, as an added bonus, you can get another look for your photos!

Layers are also great for staying warm during super cold sessions (in the 20s and 30s). Long underwear and a sweater will do wonders under a good coat.

Keep Those Toes Toasty

Honestly, is there anything better than a tiny pair of boots? Keeping fingers and toes warm is the first step to keeping your kiddo happy during your family photo shoot.

At the very least, make sure that they’re wearing good, thick socks or tights with whatever shoes you choose for them.

Don’t Forget About Accessories

The very best way to stay warm is to wear a hat, so I highly recommend finding a cute one for each of your children. If they aren’t into hats, ear muffs also do the trick!

Little Miss B’s hat in these photos is from a local Sudbury business called Owen & Sage.

I also recommend bringing mittens or gloves for your little one. Even if they aren’t into wearing them, putting them on for a couple of minutes will help to warm up—and to keep them smiling.

Bonus Tip: Warm Stuff

It’s not cheating to bring hand and foot warmers, hot chocolate, or hot apple cider to your session. In fact, it’s a smart way to warm up, and to bring a bit of extra cheer to your photos!

Stay warm out there, friends!
